Jazz & Food

And here are a few suggested spots where, regardless of the proprietor’s claim, sometimes very good jazz is but an accompaniment to good meals.

11 Bistro Yoffi (2231 Chestnut St. 885-5133), a dining establishment, is also a supper club, presenting outstanding singers and instrumentalists somewhat apart from the restaurant area. The well-known, popular pianist Dee Spencer is a regular as are such singers as Jesse Foster.

A jazz trio rules the roost at 12 Houston’s Embarcadero restaurant setting (1800 Montgomery; 392-9280).

Vinyl at Pier 23.

Trying to phone 13 Pier 23 (Embarcadero between Battery and Green; 362-5125) is hopeless — too many people having a good time in the background. All kinds of music from ragtime piano to bossa nova, bebop and blues. Food is remarkably good, drinks are plentiful, prices middling, atmosphere hectic yet relaxing. Nice deck out into the Bay.
