Click MAP to locate destinations preceded by yellow numbers. From the outside, 19Brain Wash (1122 Folsom; 415-861-3663) looks like just any other coffee bar and cafe slaking the city's craving for espresso and bagels. But this storefront cafe is more than a place to adjust your caffeine dose; you can also do your laundry in the state-of-the-art Wascomat, a behemoth washing machine that takes 14 quarters for a 35-pound load. Smokers and sun worshippers sit at one of three sidewalk tables. Milk for your coffee comes from a half-gallon carton sitting on a 1930s-style tub washer. Music is an eclectic mix of retro rock and soul, playing continuously, just loud enough to mask the hum of whirring dryers. If you have any quarters left, play pinball. And if you're dying to check your e-mail, log on to the coin-operated SF Net computer. Check out the 20 mural on a warehouse across Folsom St., designed and painted by San Francisco graffiti artist Spie and others. Called "Frisco's Wild Side," it features a parrot, bison, bobcat, boa constrictor, eagle, pyramids, totem poles, volcano and jungle-like trees, and stretches 100 feet down Langton St. Walk up Folsom to 21 New Langton Arts (1246 Folsom St.; 415-626-5416), where you can see, hear and experience nontraditional installation art, music, theater and contemporary literature. The nearby 22 South of Market Cultural Center, or SOMARTS (934 Brannan; 415-863-1414), is a city-owned warehouse that houses a gallery and theater, and hosts classes and workshops. You might see photographs, sculpture, performance, puppets, music or opera. Check what's happening at 23 Transmission Theatre (314 11th St.; 415-621-1911). 24 Venue Nine (252 9th St.; 415-626-2169) presents multimedia productions, new music and offbeat comedy. The diverse group of theater, performance and dance artists who belong to 25 Z-Space Studio (1360 Mission, 3rd Fl.; 415-437-6775) host evenings of performance works-in-progress. If you're a film aficionado, call and check for time and location of the next screening of 26 San Francisco Cinematheque (415-822-2885). Don't miss 27 S.F. Camerawork (115 Natoma; 415-863-1001) for exhibits of contemporary photography and related media. |
